As the Nobel Committee announced the 2009 Nobel Prize winner, it came as a surprise to everyone. People over the world raised the pitch that it was premature to award Obama the Nobel Peace Prize. I fully support this claim.

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the five Nobel Prizes bequeathed by the Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel.

According to Nobel's will, the Nobel Peace Prize be awarded to individuals who have done the "most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." I’m sorry to say that Obama does not in any way fit this criterion. His speeches are full of promises and plausible plans of actions. But in no way have his words achieved world peace yet. It is true that the intention is there, but the results are not out as yet. Our own Prime Minister also has the best of intentions. Then why not honor him with the Nobel Prize as well. Just promises and words are not enough.

However, someone lost their mind when they awarded him the Nobel Peace Prize! I mean come on. We are tossing him into the same category with the likes of Mother Teresa. For over 45 years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, while guiding the Missionaries of Charity's expansion, first throughout India and then in other countries. Can Obama even remotely be compared to the likes of one Mother Teresa? If there was ever such a thing as an angel on Earth, she was it. A truly phenomenal human being, indeed! No matter how much you love Obama, he isn't worthy of being compared to her. Mother Teresa won for work that she had done. Obama won for work that he plans or says he will do. There's a big difference!

One of the major plans that Obama had promised to unleash after coming to power was to resolve the seemingly unending Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan. He had promised to find out the best possible solution to bring peace in the South Asian region. Unfortunately, the only thing that the world has witnessed him doing is to continuously pump in millions of dollars of aid into Pakistan, that we all know is the epicenter of world terrorism, and hence the reason of unease in South Asia, especially India and Pakistan. Pakistan has always been known to diplomatically and financially support the terrorist groups operating against India and has even been accused by India and more recently even the U.S. of misusing the aid given to it against India. Still, the U.S. has not stopped the aid it has been giving to Pakistan or even tried to find an alternative method to engage it in the U.S.-led war against terror! This instance clearly indicates that Obama’s policies have been selfish in South Asia, chiefly aimed at securing the U.S. only. Do you think he ever deserved the Nobel Peace Prize for such a biased effort?

The father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi, who led India to the doors of freedom through his policy of non-violence, was the epitome of peace. Gandhiji was nominated for the Nobel Prize five times. But even after years of preaching and practicing peace, he was never honored with the award. It is then unjustified for Obama to be awarded with the Nobel Prize for his work in just nine months. Clearly, it was premature to award Obama the Nobel Prize.

One might argue that the prize was given to encourage Obama in his initiatives. If this is the case, then I must say, he alone does not deserve the award. There are many other leaders who preach peace. The world needs actions, not merely initiatives and ideas.

Mr. Obama’s aspirations may be laudable, but he has several tough years ahead. The Nobel committee evidently wants to promote him but it might have been wiser to hold judgment until he has achieved more. The Nobel peace prize should be more about achievement than attitude.

As Peter Marshall had once said, small deeds done are better than great deeds planned.

it would have been fair that commitee had been decided to give noble prize sometime later in the future ,really it was too early to give him prize like this ,i think he has got his best prize that any one can get in it life in his first chance ,its like hitting goal in first shot of the football match .many people got this prize after serving for lifetime and also some of them didnot get that after serving it for the lifetime (gandhiji didnot get that ).so what i think that it was too early to honour Mr. Obama. However not that it has happened and can no way be reverted, there’s no use lamenting the cause. It now becomes all the more important for Obama to value this award given to him and work more practically and in an unbiased and transparent way towards promoting peace in the world. He needs to understand that his own U.S. will never be secure unless the other issues the world over are resolved. They may, if unresolved, come back to strike his country straight in its face!
